Currency & Conversion Notes
Our calculator supports multiple currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, SEK) to help you plan in the currency you are most familiar with. Here is what you should know about exchange rates and managing money while traveling.
About Our Conversion Rates
We use approximate fixed exchange rates for budget estimation:
- 1 USD = 0.92 EUR
- 1 USD = 0.79 GBP
- 1 USD = 10.85 SEK
These are simplified rates for planning purposes. Real exchange rates fluctuate daily. Always check current rates before finalizing your budget.
Getting the Best Exchange Rate
- Use your bank's ATM network abroad — typically the best rates with lowest fees
- Avoid airport and hotel exchange counters — they usually charge high margins
- Pay in local currency when given the choice (avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion)
- Consider a travel-friendly bank card with low or zero foreign transaction fees
Cash vs. Card
The balance between cash and card varies by destination. Major cities in Europe, North America, and East Asia are largely card-friendly. Southeast Asia, South Asia, and parts of Africa and South America still rely heavily on cash. Research your specific destination before traveling.
Budget Impact of Exchange Rates
A 10% currency shift can meaningfully change your travel budget. If you are planning far in advance, consider that rates may change. Building a buffer into your budget helps absorb currency fluctuations.
Tipping Conventions
Tipping norms vary globally and affect your miscellaneous budget. In the US, 15–20% tips are standard at restaurants. In Japan and much of East Asia, tipping is not expected. In Europe, a small tip (5–10%) is common but not required. Research local customs for your destination.
